Weight Verification at Check-in

Last updated June 2026  ·  3 min read

Competitors self-report their weight at registration — weeks before they step on a scale. If your tournament uses weight-class divisions, verifying weight at check-in protects every athlete in the bracket from an unfair mismatch.

Recording verified weight

Weight verification is built into the check-in flow. When staff check a competitor in, the check-in form includes:

FieldNotes
Actual weightThe scale reading, in your tournament's weight unit (kg or lbs).
Weight verifiedA checkbox confirming staff physically weighed the competitor — distinguishing a verified reading from a self-report.
NotesFree text for anything the desk wants to flag.

Both values are stored on the check-in record alongside the timestamp, so you always know who was weighed, when, and by which desk.

Handling discrepancies

If the verified weight differs from the registered weight, the verified number is on record for review. Compare it against the competitor's division: if they still fall inside their weight class, nothing needs to happen. If they've landed outside it, you decide — move them, or apply your tournament's missed-weight rule.

Divisions are not moved automatically

By design: Recording a verified weight does not automatically move the competitor to a different division. Automatic moves on check-in morning could silently reshuffle brackets minutes before they run. Instead, the discrepancy is visible and the decision stays with you.

To move a competitor after a weigh-in, open the Divisions section and drag them to the correct division. Manual moves are treated as overrides and persist even if auto-assignment runs again — see How auto-assignment works. If the target division's bracket was already generated but hasn't started, it regenerates to include them.

Best practices

  • Weigh only the divisions that need it. If weight classes only apply to your advanced kumite divisions, don't bottleneck the whole check-in line — set up a separate weigh-in station for those divisions.
  • Verify before brackets run, not before they're generated. Brackets regenerate cleanly until results are recorded, so morning weigh-ins are safe as long as scoring hasn't started for that division.
  • Publish your missed-weight rule in advance. The software records the facts; the ruling is yours. Announcing the policy on your public page avoids arguments at the desk.
